cephalalgia...A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
May I weld all those wires in your brain
So they can’t shock you with the pain? Let me carve those shards from your skull So they can’t stab forth anymore. I will return to school if I must And major in whatever would help. Patience, my dear. The Doctor’s en route. I shall tend to your heart and your health. If that takes too long, I might take up with a trade. Train to restructure a house. The apprentice assembles A home that can tremble And quake without making a sound. I would do anything to help you find peace. I’d travel the world for the cure. I’d walk for a thousand miles a week If it meant such solace was ensured. But I fear I would faint Before I found such a sage Who’d formulate A salve for your pains. Though I’d give my left limb To alleviate what ails you, My dismemberment Would likely still fail, too. So, I’ll simply hold you Till my arm falls asleep Or if it falls off all the same. There’s not much more But I’ll do all I can And pray that perhaps it passes with the day. © 2019 Dennis ShanabergReviews
