Up the RiverA Poem by Dennis ShanabergUnfettered and untamed But the boatman passes blame. Tells me I’m bound for Hades Shore, And so I say I’ve been there A thousand times before. Eyes blackened by the day-- Every distasteful cloud of grey. My heart beats with thunderclaps. It is to the lightning that I pray That all of this will one day change-- Pieces of me rearranged To make something whole again, No longer forever on the mend. Emotions shiver up my spine Nervous neurons on my mind Burdened bliss and blistered fingers With every heartless line I write. Oh--my soul. That dark and empty hole Inside my heart That tears my world asunder And my entire life apart. If brimstone and fire hail Till the cities start to wail, I will rise within that final light Till the end washes in With a refreshing crimson tide. © 2014 Dennis ShanabergReviews
