Depravity // RebirthA Poem by Dennis ShanabergI dipped a toe into depravity, And I have to say that it suited me. I advocate with the Devil’s cry In a bed I’ve made of forgotten lies. I lose myself in the crushing sand That they all were told was the Promised land. Instead they’ve found with Dead seas of blood That God judged again with a different flood. I heard that I’m to be burned tonight On my mistakes to provide a light. Then, I will strike such an imposing sight As tall salts of Earth that are shining bright. """"""""""""""""""""""""" So full of woe are all the Ones I know, And how I wish I knew where they could go. But there’s not a Church for those like us Who have seen the Cross used as a crutch. I did attend gilded Sanctuary And I was struck by the Insincerity That was preached from the pulpit choirs That should be burned in more practiced Fires. We all will break if we can’t get one, And I’d say for some that there is none. So with angelic shout, let’s call Heavens down To come to us before we’re in the Ground. Why must we live in a Hell on Earth To get a chance at a strange rebirth In a haunted place where we have no choice But to sing to God with all our voice? Let’s live on the same as we always have And not wait our lives for Hell’s attack. The streets of Gold can be beneath your feet If unto ourselves we love and believe. © 2013 Dennis ShanabergReviews
