The Tree that Falls in the Forest

The Tree that Falls in the Forest

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

Here in the forest, there’s nothing but me--

Nothing but me, my thoughts, and the trees.

I think to myself of love, some birds, and the bees,

But realize that they hold nothing for me.

Cuz I am the tree that falls

And no one can hear.

And no one can see me

But for all of the trees.

I can be seen in the final fall leaf.

I am alive in the buds of the spring.

The heat wakes me up.

Then, the cold kills me off.

I am home for the creatures who need.

I am food for the creatures who eat.

I’m a little nuts or so they have said.

I’ll live forever alone till I’m dead.

Cuz I am the tree that falls

And no one can hear.

And no one can see me

But for all of the trees.

I wish lightning would strike me down in the night,

Or a spark would set me up all alight,

To leave my mark as I decay to the dirt.

Then, I’d give something to all with no hurt.

I wanna burn.

I wanna leave.

I wanna be the tree that someone might see.

I wanna go with something left to leave.
