Defusing the Bomb

Defusing the Bomb

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg

1, & 2, & 3, &--

Four thousand degrees

At the heart of me

This is the end of everything you’ve ever seen.

Run in all directions.

Oh--This destruction

Will be greater than anything you’ve ever dreamed.

I can barely breathe.

My brow, it perspires.

I think that I might die.

Oh--It’s looking dire.

I’m defusing the bomb.

I’m cutting the wire.

I’m watching the countdown

Till it’s all on fire.

Things are about to explode.

All that I know

Is that this life has led me to this moment.

Flames contained in some clay--

Night turned to day.

Face in the inferno; How is it that I know it?

Oh wait---I am the bomb,

And I’m going to go off

In

3,

2,

1....

frightening ... one can only stuff it for so long ... it may escape inappropriately .. a burst of anger or laughter when it isn't called for .. in our society when so many carry frustrations and bitterness and despair ... it can explode .. it will find expression .. sometimes in horrific ways .. the perspective of your speaker is one i would only experience through writing .. looking inside where everything is ablaze and i ...trembling... am face with cutting my own wire .. sheesh .. unique perspective .. frightening theme ..
