The Power of AlgernonA Poem by Dennis ShanabergThe mouse stroked crumbs from his furry grey pate. Claws from dark paws cleaned up the meal that he ate. The wind blew with gusts, carrying heavy leaves. The mouse shivered on as the cold air would breathe. His paws plodded through the frozen soil and dirt As he moved ever on in his toilsome search. He hoped he could find some shelter from the frost. The home he once had was tragically lost. At last, the mouse heard a great rustling of leaves. From the source of it came a thankful red heat. The mouse approached the sound and it’s bright feeling Wondering what it might inevitably bring. A glow he soon saw, crimson as he had never seen. A shimmering window that he had only ever dreamed. Timidly, he took a step into the strangest portal of light And onto a platform far on the other side. An expanse of black before him stretched ever on, But red fire burned bright before very long. Those gasses grew hotter before the mouse into stars. He felt the heat now too burning in his heart. Huge rocks collided around him into earths. Little did he know, but the mouse saw our very birth. The mouse knew naught of what it all might have meant. He simply enjoyed the heat and the shelter that it leant. In those moments, he found answers to the questions many ask, But realized the warmth would not forever last. With that, the mouse turned to the weird red window in time, And quickly, those images simply slipped from his tiny mind. He returned to the cold, and crawled ‘neath some loose brush. Curled up, he finally fell to sleep with a hush. In darkness, the mouse dreamt of the next meal he would get. Never again, did he think of our birth in bright red. © 2012 Dennis ShanabergReviews
