Words From the Mouths

Words From the Mouths

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg

She always searches for shadows even when it is sunny out.

She shouts the glass ain’t full after she has already drank it down.

She hates how she’s all alone, but she pushes out everyone she meets.

She says she wishes they wouldn’t go away, but she verbal tazes each person that she greets.

She said, “The night life here sucks.”

He said, “There ain’t any night life here at all.”
She said, “That guy just checked me out.”
He didn’t say much, just got in another late night drunken brawl.

He had such a great big heart with only a thimble-full of love that he tried to hide.

He was such an honest young man, but with such unfortunate involuntary wand’ring eyes.

He believed in love at first sight, but then it happened to him again and again.

He thought that his girl was only ever his, until he saw her with such unsavory other men.

He said,

“She said,

‘Will you be mine?’”

She said,

“He said,

‘For a short time.’”

He said,

She’s his

Minute long bride.

She said,

He’s her

Love of her life.

He didn’t know what to say to those final words.

He hoped somehow his final thoughts were somehow heard.

Maybe in the morning, or two months, or even more,

He and she would take a step and open another door--

Love is difficult, but as long as two people are able to accept how one another are and are able to work through their past and problems, then they are fully capable of making a better future for themselves and others. Together, they could benefit from one another or fall. Relationships work in strange ways, but it takes a lot in order to keep one stable and afloat. If both hearts are in it, then they can conquer anything I believe.

A very good tale in your poem. Those love affairs started with the knowledge of separation. Leave little to lose. If we are lucky. May have something to hold on to. No weakness in this poem. Took me on a journey that end with the morning light? Thank you for the outstanding poetry.
