An Unfortunate Osmosis of Will

An Unfortunate Osmosis of Will

A Story by Dennis Shanaberg
"

an unspoken dialogue between myself and anyone I meet

"

1: Fear me.  I am no one.

2: How can I fear nothing?
1: I am not nothing.  Simply no one.

2: I do not understand.

1: And that is why you should be afraid.  I am a shell, here for use from the highest bidder.

2: That doesn’t sound terrifying at all.

1: It should.  If you get close enough, we will become one.

2: Are you not your own person?

1: I am until you come too near.

2: So, you are not your own.  You simply absorb others to your own ends.

1: Quite the contrary.  I inevitably allow them to absorb me ‘till all I do is to their own ends.

2: You let others use you, then?

1: No.  I become one with them, but lose myself somewhere there within.

2: And in that, their desires become your own?
1: Exactly; it is not intentional on anyone’s part--just an unfortunate osmosis of will.

2: Why don’t you stop it?

1: I try, but the only way seems to be to hold those I meet at bay.

2: So, you push others away?

1: If I don’t push them away, they usually end up running similarly as far as possible.

2: You know, perhaps you’ve just been around the wrong people.

1: All people are the wrong people, I assure you.

2: And I assure you, you are wrong.  Not everyone forces their will upon you.

1: They do not need to force it.  I unknowingly beg for it.

2: You cannot just remain an unhappy hermit for the remainder of your life.

1: Perhaps, but I sure wish I could try.  But then again, I don’t.

2: So, then, why not try a bit of friendship?

1: I am still a bit wary of it.

2: Trust me; it will be all alright.

1: All right.  Whatever you want.
