Experiments in Verses

Experiments in Verses

A Poem by Dennis Shanaberg
"

A song that's not a song, but rather an experiment that fails at experimenting that is all about experimentation

"
(intro.)
Always so stuck in structure.
All too often, I am iambic.
Pent-up thoughts in pentameter.
Couplets 'n' AB/AB rhyme seems to stick.

(chorus.)
Here's the chorus.
Here's the beat.
Read these words.
Find what they mean (x2)
To me.

(verse 1.)
A friend of mine can simply write without a care--experimental.
And he makes art.
I am unable.  It is painful to keep from rhyming right here.
It's pulling me apart.
AB/AB--I've done it again.
I cannot experiment as my friend.
Just play with words, and call it wordplay,
But still stick to the structure the books will say.

(repeat chorus x1.)

(bridge.)
Blank white canvas.  Find the meaning.
Love of a friend.  Find the meaning.
Black ink in books.  Find the meaning.
Beautiful scents.  Find the meaning.

(repeat chorus x2.)

(verse 2.)
Root it all down in reality.
Bend the conceptual to work for me.
I am a madman stealing art.
So does any of this really come from the ...

Not easy to write with rules and restriction. In my lifetime I took many writing classes and didn't like to write with rules and regulations. You did very well with this poem. I like the thoughts and flow in the poem. Thank you for sharing the excellent poem.
