Moonless Nights

Moonless Nights

A Poem by Delmar Cooper
"

words in short rows

"

The live oaks by the river live and thrive and hide

In summer when the heat is up in the leaves

And the blood boils or at least steeps

In rich veins of poor men and their women

Great white moths fly at night, flame drawn to

Where the live oaks by the river thrive and hide

In summer high up in the leaves

The dark things high up in the leaves

The things that watch and wait for

Opportunities, opportunities and

Unattended children.

I often get that feeling, too, that behind the (more or less) peaceful and "normal" facade of the world there's something mad and sinister. The Gnostics already talked about it in their dualistic worldview way back when. The mood in this poem is truly creepy - which is a compliment to your writing.

Thanks for reading. Yes, it went over the edge of the world there at the end.

Ok, now where can I buy a really long mouse cord?
i can't sleep anymore. Just a few hours here and there. Then i'm up looking for something growing to put some water on. Or having doubts about the last poem I wrote. And it actually gets worst in the summer months. In July and August I actually have an excuse. I blame the morning doves for song. For the mouse that left shards of paper strewn on the bathroom floor. And I blame you and your moonless nights for me searching the sky for the night creatures destined to eat me whole...nappy hair and all........./ love dana
