War Correspondent

A Poem by Delmar Cooper
"

The usual and semi-required Spring poem dutifully written and posted.

"

War Correspondent

Like sixty-eight and Tet, only local and now

Our man from the front confirmed this somehow:

“Overnight The Maple Seed Corps coptered down

Satellites confirm  they cover the disputed ground”

Experts concur: This scheme underway;

Recover to True Color ( A Times published story).

Maple flags, red and gold, returned to glory

By late October (if the plan holds sway),

Then “Home by Christmas”, as the soldiers say.

My maples have yet to copter. In fact, we had 70's yesterday, 50's today, and it's going to be in the 20's and 30's tomorrow. It's fake spring season. I know this poem is kind of written tongue in cheek, but it almost sounded like something Kortas would have written. Maybe it was the double use of parenthesis that ticked something off in my brain. Nice tight rhymes. I'm sure I'm missing something, but at this moment I still think it is an entertaining poem that will hold up.

Like! Great example of past lesson not learned. Maybe repeated similar scenarios learnt. My father was a Vietnam Vet. (Not relevant). Same old story different era...wars up sh*t creek to me. Same old patterns. Maybe. But respect much to veterans and victims of war a like. All get shafted in any ways.

Thanks for the write 👍

Very nice touch to poem that speaks to me of friends I lost in Nam, those who did not make it home by Christmas, or came home early in body bags ... Very enjoyable read ...

Title and poem are great. Vietnam 68 , Tet offensive and the story published by The Times. You sum it all up marvelously and with precision.

You are welcome ....
This might be one of the most far-fetched & original spoofs --comparing warlike imagery with maples going thru the various seasons of color! I had to read it twice to really examine your astute details & I’m sure I missed quite a few. The only problem with today’s wars is that there are only beginnings (spring) but rarely tapering off (autumn). Since we have no “colors” here, our trees might resemble war even better: bright and then dull *sigh!* Nice use of imagination! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Being Canadian, the maple are dear to my heart and I can see this scene captured in one of those old time black and white animated Disney scenes. A darker version of Fantasia with with a symphony accompaniment.
