Downstream

Downstream

A Poem by Delmar Cooper
"

just words disguised as poetry

"

Downstream

Downstream from men

And from the camps of men

Downstream from the weighty clamor and clank of men

And the Great Insatiable Lust of men

A woman sings to her babe

And suckles him at her breast

And bathes him in the cool waters of the river

The cool waters of a river

Of diluted blood

Dominance and lust is in our DNA. We deny it. Ignore it. Play at being the effeminate Dagwood, but its no use. Its what pushes us on to greater heights and it is our shame that everyone suffers because of it. I think this ones a keeper. I liked it.

I imagine nearly every river on earth can lay an even claim to that descriptive depiction at one time or another of its existence. We are so efficient at killing each other and even ourselves regardless of the particular age.

On the other side of the imagery, bravery and "honor" are laudably and loudly touted in every schoolyard and classroom. Patriotism is a mindset. History and glory call for tomorrows, and who are we to argue as a species?

Thank you for your gracious and encouraging comment.
I had this image of a third world country, and the strife going on all around her. A sharp and poignant piece.
