Wish I Could Run

Wish I Could Run

A Poem by Absentee Reality Check

His voice rises
reaching a fever pitch of rage
bouncy ball fast and thunder clap loud against the walls
the corner beckons with its facade of safety
as his shadow devours the hallway in front of you

and a whimper claws its way out of your throat
he is too close
there is no
way to avoid the downpour of fists

scared to leave and to terrified to stay
you just run away deeper into yourself
finding that quiet place in the dark where you can feel secure and sheltered
hoping that someone will come and save you some day
but expecting that they won't

"But you can run!!" I wanna shout it so bad... :( We punish ourselves when instincts or emotions fail, so we run to that dark, safe place. We run back to our demons, they beckon. But they bring no happiness, only pain.

pretty meaningful poem. I interpreted it as either a drunken husband abusing his wife or a drunken father abusing his child. I believe you use the masculine figure as the beater because it is a stereotype and it is often seen as the man that beats people. I Like the way you make the poem move as well its very well written in terms of not telling it straight out, its written almost as if the person is tiptoeing round the problem which might be mimicked in the real life situation. But all in all i found it a good read :) very thought-provoking.
