Chapter 12: Coffee And HandcuffsA Chapter by Dejavu1978When Det.Jessie Sanchez goes undercover to take down a mob boss she finds her heart torn. She has to decide who's the real monster.A crime boss who treats her well or a husband she could never please.Jessie couldn't sleep that night. Her thoughts went over and over the memories of her marriage. They had been married three years and Josh had gone undercover to catch Gianetti a year into it. She never knew exact details of his mission, only that it revolved around Mickey Gianetti, Dave's younger sister. She had assumed he was only tailing the girl or perhaps had monitored her phone calls and such. It was no secret that Dave was protective of her and took great care to keep any harm from coming to her. So she never thought the bureau would have attempted to send in an agent to date the girl. She couldn't have been more than eighteen at the time. She found herself feeling badly for Dave and how it must have devastated him when he found out that Josh was a cop and had used her to get to him. She felt even more sorry for the young girl he had taken advantage of. But what hurt the most was that Josh had given her such a hard time about having to get close to Gianetti. He had been so hateful and mean. He had accused her of doing things she had no intentions of letting happen and the whole time he knew he had already done the same thing. It all became clearer the more she thought about it. The real reason behind his accusaition manifested from his own guilt. She remembered what he had said when he had returned home. He refused to share any details of the case with her as he normally would. “I just want to forget about.” he had told her. Jessie had assumed he had had a horrifying experience that he had wanted to forget. But the truth was he didn't want her to know he had been dating and sleeping with another woman. Jessie woke up the next day feeling like everything she had known about herself and the people in her life where wrong. She wanted to believe the entire ordeal was nothing more than a bad dream. "How could he do that to me?" She said as she stared up at the ceiling. It was the lie that had hurt her more than what he had done. She could understand why he had slept with her and she was sure sure she would have forgiven him. But to be as cruel as he had been to her where Gianatti and her mission had been concerned had been more than she could understand. He of all people should have been more understanding no matter how hurtful the thought was to him. She knew she would have to talk to him sometime about it. But at that moment she didn't want to look at him. "You never forget your first" she remembered his words. They replayed in her head like a broken record and it rang out loudly over every other thought she had.. It made her wonder what kind of man she was really married to. Did she really know him? Had he only made love to that girl to anger Gianetti? Then there was Dave. Throughout the whole assignment she had wondered if he really was the man they needed to be targeting. He had been so nice and so sweet. And she had begun to think he wasn't capable of the horrible crimes they said he had done. Yes, she was sure he did do some illegal activity, but he certainly was no murderer. But all of that was different now. She had heard him threaten Josh's life. But could it have only been threats. And where was Jack? She didn't want to imagine what his fate may have been. Jessie got up and got dressed. She didn't feel like putting much effort into it. She slipped on a pair of jeans with the t-shirt she had worn to sleep in. She tied her hair back in a low pony tail and then pulled on her sneakers. She didn't really care what she looked like . She was too depressed to care. Once she was dressed, she headed to her car. She had not tried to drive the old relic since the first day on the assignment. She had made up her mind to go and see Dave one more time. She needed closure. She wanted to see him for what he really was and then bury her crush in the back of her mind and forget it was ever there. It never should have been in the first place. She thought how unprofessional it had been for her to begin to care about her suspect. She jumped into the Duster and made her way to the club. She was nervous and decided to eat something first. So she stopped at a coffee shop and ordered a small cappuccino and a breakfast platter. She took a seat at a small table by the window and stared out of it as she stirred her coffee. Finally she looked down at her coffee and watched the swirls her straw made. She thought about how much she had wanted to make a name for herself in the FBI just as her father had. Alex Burrows had been one of the top agents in the field until the day he had died. But she was nothing like him. "Maybe this isn't my calling." She thought. She sipped her coffee and broke off a piece of her toast and popped it into her mouth.. After only taking a bite or two of her eggs she pushed it away not feeling as hungry as she had before. She leaned back in her seat and propped her elbows up on the table then rested her chin on her hands. She glanced out the window. It was just that moment that Gianetti walked by and had stopped just outside of the window where she sat. They stared into each others eyes for a moment before she looked away. Dave closed his eyes and swallowed the lump of pain that had settled in his throat threatening to choke him. He had been nearby picking up his dry cleaning when he had seen Jessie in the window. He took a step toward his car but he couldn't walk away from Jessie. Not yet. He had to talk to her and see where he stood in her eyes despite his best judgment. He walked into the coffee shop and up to the table that Jessie occupied. He set down his garment bags and slid into the seat beside them. “Are you okay?” he asked her. “You looked pretty shaken up last night.” He knew she had to be horrified by what she had seen and confused. Jessie didn't know what to say about the night before. She closed her eyes and looked out the window. “I'm sorry you had to see that.” he continued. Jessie looked at him and opened her mouth to speak, but his cell phone rang and he took it from his pocket and checked the number. “Excuse me.” he said and opened it. “Ya.” he said into the receiver and listened for a minute. “Okay, so what did you find out.” Jessie wondered what he was getting information about and if it had anything to do with Jack. She watched Dave's expression as he listened. His face seemed to turn pale as he listened. His eyes met hers once and he looked away again. “Are you sure.” he said clearing his throat. He sounded like he was choking up. “No, I'll handle it myself.” he listened a little longer. “No, I got something else in mind.” he then hung up his phone and gave her a small smile. Then stared at her intently. “I got some business to take care of.” he said softly. “You'll be at the club tonight right?” “I don't think it would be a good idea for me to continue working for you.” Jessie said thinking it was a great opportunity to quit. And it would look better than her just not showing up any more. “It's your choice.” he said taking her hand in his. He stared at her a moment. His eyes hypnotized hers. “I'm going to be honest Jessie. I like you. You don't know how hard that is for me to say. I would really like you to return. If you don't want to dance, I'll hire you as a waitress.” “I'll think about it.” she said. She felt the heat rise in her cheeks. He acted so genuine. He seemed to care so much. How could he be a killer? His behavior confused her even more. He got up and grabbed his dry cleaning. He took a small step to her side of the table and bent down and kissed her cheek. Then he left with a small smile on his lips. Dave walked to his car with the garments slung over his shoulder. He pulled his keys out of his pocket and started to unlock the door of his car. Suddenly a big black navigator screeched to a stop beside him and Josh Sanchez and three other cops all jumped out with their guns drawn. "Put your hands on the car!" Josh screamed at him. Gianetti held his hands out still holding his dry cleaning. He smirked at the cop. "Do it now!" Josh yelled. "What is it now?" Dave said calmly. "You got nothing on me Sanchez. When are you going to give it up?" The smirk on his face irritated Josh even more. Josh moved closer to him and holstered his gun. He pulled out his hand cuffs while his men kept there sights locked on Dave.. "You are under arrest for the murder of Jack Vance." he began clamping one of the cuffs on his right wrist hard. "You have the right to remain silent." he said jerking the dry cleaning from his other hand and turning him around to face his car. He then slammed him against it with all his strength and fastened his other hand with the free cuff. Dave narrowed his eyes in anger. He looked up to see Jessie watching from the coffee shop window with a look of horror on her face. It angered him more. Not only had Sanchez arrested him in public and embarrassed him but he had messed up the plans he had for Jessie. Jessie watched from the window as her husband arrested her target. She wondered what they had found on him. She stayed in her seat as he was placed in the back of the navigator and driven off to jail. It looked as though her husband had finally gotten exactly what he had wanted. Unable to put it off any longer Jessie made her way to the station. Sure that it would be only moments before she would make her true identity known to Dave Gianetti. It saddened her because she knew he cared for her and no matter what he had done she didn't want to break his heart. © 2010 Dejavu1978Author's Note
