the cat and the bird

the cat and the bird

A Poem by A.M. Nelson

my cat has been naughty,
has killed another bird

feathers lie strewn like
little dresses on the bedroom
floor,

i slide its desiccated body
into the dustpan, it rolls
over somewhat and small black
pin-prick eyes stare into me.
they are lifeless and
heartbreaking.

mirrored, I can see myself, floating
on that perfect black
dropped into a bin;
forgotten.

the cat wants food,
the bird is dead.

To see yourself in those dead eyes- tossed into the dust-bin - prey unfit to eat. Interesting concept - makes one look at it from various angles before moving on so quickly - to be tossed is inevitable, perhaps - and I guess that is reward enough for living. Sentenced or rewarded - whichever way you look at it.

Yes!

Profound. And as usual very well written...meaning well edited meaning delicately crafted.

Beyond the lyrical touch I very much enjoyed the sort of haiku sense of natural process tied to human condition.

Sweet.
