Just Another Woman

Just Another Woman

A Poem by Deepa Ragunathan
"

Women are beautiful, strong and supportive. As mothers they care, as sisters they love, as daughters they make us proud, as wives, they help. But what about them?

"
Born her daddy's princess,
Growing up her mother's helper,
Stuck in a giving process,
With hardly any to help her.
Holding her head just so,
Treating her brothers just right,
With a mask for wherever she'd go,
A painted smile unwaveringly bright.
Wrought with chains of rules,
Taught not to live, but exist,
To be happy with small pools,
While seas tempt her into their fist.
A paragon of virtue, of grace,
She makes family proud,
Weeping behind a smiling face,
Whispering while yearning to be loud.
Finally grown and blossomed,
A butterfly ready to fly,
Her eyes glowed,heart thrummed,
freedom momentarily come by.
Given away one fine day,
To a family of strangers,
Her name lost in the fray,
Nothing to call purely hers.
New people to please,
More masks to wear.
With this pattern never cease?
Is it her yoke to bear?
