Out of his Mind

Out of his Mind

A Poem by Donni
"

Paternal Grandfather passed in 1992 after battling Alzheimers for nearly 10 years. Now Maternal Grandmother has fallen to this cruel fate, we know the path that lays before her we hold her memories close so that we can give them back to her in some small

"

Out of his Mind

His thought slip away from him
One image at a time
Grasping at them with fear
Of who he will be when they are all gone
He rages
He cries
Life just drifts away
day by day
moment by moment
What remnant are left behind
to explain the hardship etched across his brow
A cruel enemy has ravished his mind
Stolen all his joys, all his pains
Till the final memory is gone
The curtain drops across his eyes
Breath still fills his lungs
Blood still pumps his heart
He is no more
He no longer cares

Ach, you nail down perfectly the way a person's mind dies while they continue to breath and the blood pumps through them. The notion of the final memory going and the curtain falling within is very moving. It must be terrifying to sense yourself slipping into that dark place of nothingness. And of course it is hard to watch someone suffer such a fate. All that can be said is that they reach a point of not being able to care perhaps.

Sounds like me yesterday! :)

All kiddind aside, you really did an amazing job of putting face to face with a poor soul who is losing a grip on everything. Awesome job!

Cheers!
