The Ruins of Rushing

The Ruins of Rushing

A Poem by DedPoet

Dozing at dawn
The incessant alarm hits,
Drowsy and frowning
And dimly discerning the lights
From the runaway dreams,
Forgetting where I was,
Remembering where I am,
My thoughts begin a gallop
Hurling toward the repetition,
I rise to mediocrity and run
To stagnat toilings.
A few minutes ago I was in a dream,
The dream more real that this
Unreality.
I utter to myself, bymyself
Its time to go,
Feeding the kids,
Paying the bills,
Proving to myself its worth it,
Worthwhile dreams recede like tides
In oceans I'll never see,
The time is passed for hoping on a times past,
Yesterday is today,
I rush for tomorrow, tomorrow is today,
Repetition of my doldrums,
Its worth it, I rush to be late,
Its not life,
Rushing the spirit,
I cast my face into the sea
Of faceless rushers,
Rushing to mediocrity,
The ruins of dreams....

This is both motivating and heartbreaking. The things we say to ourselves to help us persevere even when we feel like we can't. Doing what we have to do. The line "rushing to mediocrity" really speaks to me. As a child and teenager my parents would say to me that mediocrity won't be tolerated. I think longing for better is what dooms us, sometimes.

I rise to mediocrity and run
To stagnant toilings.

This line says so much about the "quiet desperation" we find ourselves facing each day. Your vivid poem reminds this reader that it is the rushing that makes it mundane... Good ponder here, DedPoet.

can understand the bleakness of facing another day and the longing for the world of dreams. Sometimes dreams are more interesting that the doldrums of day to day living. This poem really makes you think about the dichotomy between the two worlds - something that is not often expressed this well., Maybe those dreams - good or bad - are what keep us sane in the mediocre world of feeding the kids and paying the bills. I never thought about this too much, but your poem has brought it to light... Thanks for that.
