Alone While Surrounded by Pairs.

Alone While Surrounded by Pairs.

A Poem by Typhoid Kelsey

Have you ever realized while in the midst of a crowd how very alone we really are?

I observed as bubbling tumult brewed through the halls of my high school-

Senior Ball!-Oh, who are you going with? Who should I ask? I'm so nervous!

I shrugged most of the time and made some general correct answer so as not to appear rude,

but I wish I could have openly displayed my cynicism.

I thought of saying if I wanted to pay money to be in a crowded room of sweaty teenagers, it would have to be a concert.

It really did sound witty in my head.

But for the most part, I kept my mouth shut as usual.

There was some idea behind it though, the idea of sentimental nostalgia;

that it's required of a graduating senior to go and, ever the rebellious, non-conforming teen,

I pretended to shrug it off and kept a face of indifference.

And in retrospect-

I'm ashamed that this had to be,

that I couldn't swallow my pride and make the most of my obligation to immature society.
