Christian Genetic Counselor

This short post discusses if it is possible to be a Christian and do genetic counseling

I think that it is very possible to be a Christian as well as be an effective Genetic Counselor. I maintain that it's my ethical and moral duty to share what truth I am aware of. God's Word calls us to action; it says: "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy" (Proverbs 31:8-9 New International Version). I interpret this as a clear sign that I am to speak for the child who God created that cannot talk for him/herself.

Children are gifts from the Lord and I believe we don’t have the right to murder what he breathed life into. The couple has not yet made a choice so the opportunity to guide them into a good one lies on my shoulders. I would encourage them to consider other options, and provide them with resources that could give them future support. I would strongly urge them to decline abortion as an option. I would compassionately ask them to consider what traumatic emotional ramifications might have to be dealt with if they chose to terminate the pregnancy.

Included in Christian counselors' duties are to help enlighten some who have not been. The couple will ultimately determine what is suitable for them however; an effective counselor shares their own views and encourages them to make the best decision not only for today but for the tomorrows that will come.
