Ariose Vers Libre

Ariose Vers Libre

A Poem by Deborah Hamilton
"

A friend wrote a poem using song titles (indicated by caps), as well as added words (lower-case) to round out the piece. I decided to write one using only song titles with no additional words.

"

WHAT’S NEW PUSSYCAT?

I HAD TOO MUCH TO DREAM LAST NIGHT.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE,

I FALL TO PIECES.

THE THRILL IS GONE;

I JUST DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF.

IS THIS IT?

I’M WRONG ABOUT EVERYTHING.

PERFECT DAY---

IT’S MY PARTY.

SO LONELY

IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR;

WILD AND UNTAMED THING,

I LET MYSELF FALL.

PLAY ME BACKWARDS---

UNTOUCHABLE FACE.

TIME IS A HEALER.

THE SENSUAL WORLD…

IF I WAS YOUR GIRLFRIEND,

KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU---

LAY MY LOVE,

EXPRESS YOURSELF,

…AIN’T THAT PRETTY AT ALL.

OBJECT OF MY AFFECTION,

WALK THIS WAY.

STOP YOUR SOBBING;

TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS.

I SEE YOU BABY…

I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU CALL ME.

GOD ONLY KNOWS---

HAVE MERCY.

YOU DON’T KNOW ME…

I DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT.

FEELING ALRIGHT,

FEELING GOOD.

YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR HAT ON---

LET’S GO GET STONED.

GONE

GONE

GONE…

Quite a range of emotion. Nice idea, the quilted poem.
