The Ghost Of Love
A Poem by Debra Stevens Edwards (Debby)
The Ghost of Love(3)
Love has a shadow,
A ghost you could say.
It follows and stalks you
Each night and day.
Forget if you can
Repent if you must.
It's a taunting thing
You cannot trust.
Tortured by memories
Of beautiful things.
you'll soon hate it
and the tears it brings.
Dreams as cold fingers
Clutching your heart.
Or the glimpse of Your
face there in the dark.
Memories like that of
A spectre's touch.
A pain as in death
hurts you so much.
So beware my friend,
When love walks in.
For the ghost of love,
May haunt you again...
Wow I love this poem. It's so powerful and so, so true. Love does have a shadow, doesn't it? I never thought of it that way. I can wake up remembering a love I had 20 years ago just like it was yesterday, and it's the 'ghost,' isn't it?
Thank you for suggesting I read this. It's my day off, finally, and I want to eat poetry all day long, and yours was the first course! It got me started, or else I might have done something else.
Debra, I feel a lot in this poem. I can relate through your words beautifully placed, well rounded and full of love. My twin died a year ago, and those memories do burn, sting and haunt. As if a ghost, the memories remain and hard to get out of your way. Even though you want to keep the memories alive. But to move on, we have to leave the past behind and the ghost that you talk about will follow. Very moving...
Hauntingly Beautiful! Again, you swept me away with rhymes that flowed easily and lines that wisp into my thoughts, stirring emotions and memories. I really love the end with a warning to "beware".
Debra-
This is a sort of sonnet, a throwback poem of yesteryear
that will likely to be repeated in books someday.
You did an amazing job with the rhyme scheme and length; depth.
It truly feels like a poem.
Where did THIS come from? I'm so very, very impressed with this poem. The flow is great and the rhymes are not awkward at all. The only thing I saw that made me look twice was :
"It will haunt you with memories
Of beautiful things.
And youll hate it,
For the tears it brings. "
I might have written the last line to be:
"For all of the tears it brings."
... for the sake of meter.
But geez Debra, this poem just took my breath away.
