The Ghost Of Love
A Poem by Debra Stevens Edwards (Debby)
The Ghost of Love(3)
Love has a shadow,
A ghost you could say.
It follows and stalks you
Each night and day.
Forget if you can
Repent if you must.
It's a taunting thing
You cannot trust.
Tortured by memories
Of beautiful things.
you'll soon hate it
and the tears it brings.
Dreams as cold fingers
Clutching your heart.
Or the glimpse of Your
face there in the dark.
Memories like that of
A spectre's touch.
A pain as in death
hurts you so much.
So beware my friend,
When love walks in.
For the ghost of love,
May haunt you again...
Wow I love this poem. It's so powerful and so, so true. Love does have a shadow, doesn't it? I never thought of it that way. I can wake up remembering a love I had 20 years ago just like it was yesterday, and it's the 'ghost,' isn't it?
Thank you for suggesting I read this. It's my day off, finally, and I want to eat poetry all day long, and yours was the first course! It got me started, or else I might have done something else.
yes, she has followed me through the ache of longing nights when all I could think about was to kiss the beloved with the same kiss the beloved kisses me and in that kiss live eternally ... well writ capturing the haunted what if of Love lost!
Your metaphors are amazing! I love how this shows the darker side of love and describes its haunting grasp...and the warning is one to heed. Great work yet again!

oh, but the ghost of love is a benevolent one, n'est pas? sure, he does seem to enter our lives when it is the most inopportune moment, but he brings delicious memories as a peace offering. your words are written in flawless lyrical rhyme. wonderful! lydia
Debbie, this is excellent. I love the way this flows! How unique...."The Ghost of Love!" Did you really write this in 1976? That was the year I graduated from Highschool. I hate to admit that. Definitely dates me. I haven't heard a poem in awhile that flows as easily this one does. The whole concept gives such a different angle of love. There's that old saying that goes, "You hurt the ones you love the most." We cannot be hurt if there aren't feelings there...and I know there are times, and always will be, that love hurts. Thanks for sharing.
