What A Dad Is

A dad should be a loving, caring, supportive person in your life.

My dad should not be considered a dad,

he was an alcoholic,

he was an abuser,

he was a murderer,

he was a man who only cared after he got caught,

a man who only reached out after he got locked up,

a man who blamed my mom when his kids finally spoke up for themselves.

Even though he was all of this, he was also a victim,

a victim who was neglected in his childhood,

a victim who was abused in his childhood,

a victim who was around alcoholics his whole life.

I don't forgive my dad for what he did, but I do understand the pain he went through,

because he did the same thing to me.

Dear goodness, jay! What to say because - surely this is fact. Thinking.. Can but say that being able to write as you do is a somehow incredible tool - a form of protection. It will last you forever to be used as kindness for that special You and in time, when you're ready and sure - for others. Words to be used for the kindness you deserve and can when and only when, able to share. Sigh.. you have great courage, jay.

It's good you have come to an understanding of your father's behavior. You have the chance to break the chain of trauma, though. These things don't have to continue, generation after generation.
