3 AM Whistles

3 AM Whistles

A Poem by Debbie_Philly

3 AM WHISTLES

The whistle blows in the distance

Clear rhythmic motions of the night

Sleepy, groggy ready for rest yet

My brain races

Listening to the ever present clatter of the

Train in intervals calm my mind

Laying here with mild and comforting

Breezes enveloping me

It is the sound of the 3 am locomotive

That lull’s me into a restless dream state

Adventures await my dreams tonight

Filled with nocturnal surprises

Spring nights in the city can sometimes

Be still bringing the sense of nostalgia

To mind flooding me with memories

Of childhood and peace at least in

This uneasy nomadic night

Well I live right by a train and love it. I can very much relate to the 3rd stanza. Honestly, the sound puts me to sleep, makes me feel like I'm never alone.

I like the image in the first 3 lines of stanza 1 and 2nd stanza and well they were all very nice. Beautifully written. Thank you.

You are anomaly, I'm glad you love the sound of trains at three a.m. I do not, when I'm delivering my load in Northern Alabama the scare out of my sleep. This was a great reminiscing poem.

Yes, in the distance I can make out the rolling wave of nostalgia they would bring.
I love the forlorn sound of a train whistle. There is something eerily calming about it. This poem captures that beautifully.

Being near a major transit, I liked this. But there is a nice chyme to the ring of a train passing by.

I know those 3am sounds well. You describe them vividly. Those trains can inspire dreams or shatter them. Great write!

Thank you very much Rita.... yes that sound always touches me... I love it :)
I came back...I remember the sounds of trains from both the riding and the living near tracks. It's a different thing now I think - different types of trains and fewer places to catch and ride them. History is leaving us behind Deb...
