Gone before I even knew

Gone before I even knew

A Poem by Death's Poet
"

Lucy

"
You were gone before I even knew
What was I supposed to do?
I would have done anything, if only to save you.

But sadly, I was given no way
No way to save you, to make you stay
In spite of myself, an angel in the ground you lay

I'm sorry for both what was done and what was not
So in ink and tears, to you this letter I have wrought

To tell you that I'm sorry for letting go of you
But tell me. PLEASE tell me

WHAT WAS I SUPPOSED TO DO?

This is a torture that I have known quite well in my life. The pain and guilt in this piece are clearly evident in the way the writer pleads for an answer (and forgiveness) both in the beginning and at the end. When loved ones leave us too soon, time is what eventually answers our questions and forgives our guilt. Well done! ☺
