An Anchor and A Light.

An Anchor and A Light.

A Poem by nora
"

For Stephanie.

"

An Anchor and A Light.

The surface, glistening and wavering above her.
Her eyes open wide,
Begging for a breath
Of air so sweet and fresh.
The dolphins and fish have disappeared,
Leaving only weeds,
And waves.
Crashing, bruising waves.
She is dragged to the depths,
Tangled in long green ropes of seaweed.
Death is the inevitable,
The surface, farther and farther away.
She is too weak to swim.
Lost is her willpower,
And her breathing grows shallow.
The waves, the terrible, gripping weeds,
Restrain her.
The darkness encases her,
And yet,
The very things that are destroying her,
Keep her anchored to the ground.

Until,
A delicate pair of hands,
Insignificant alone,
But with this purpose,
They are magnificent.
They reach down, tearing her from
The dirty grip,
Thrusting her through the surface,
And up toward the sun.

Theres quite a bit of symbolism in this one. Dont try to interpret it if youre not up to it :)

You say its full of Symbolism, but it works in a literal sense too. I like it when poems are like that, with a two way meaning. While in a literal sense its (obviously) a girl drowning, in a symbolic it could range from someone being 'drowned' with stress , or, in my case school work- to a girl (and this is very interpretive of me and white i'm, or rather i'm seeing a friend, go through at the moment) being 'suffocated' by a relationship thats holding her down (again, i would be sooo muuuchhh better for her.) But neither of those take into account the last part, which is a curve ball if you will.

ANyway, im wondering, the line 'The dolphins and fish have disappeared,' does dolphins have any symbolic significance? or is it just there because it works, or you just like dolphins? I know for myself i would've put whales. Thats because i associate whales with the whale songs, witch are quite beautiful (i have heard them for real) and so absence of whales symbolizes a absence of beauty for me. but thats getting off topic!

I want to interpret this. Reaper brought up the dolphins point and I was like hmmm, I really want to interpret this now, haha. I'll be back later :)
