New Dress

New Dress

A Chapter by Rae

"Good morning, Haley!" My sister ran up to me and embraced me. Since the accident, we had become a lot closer.

"Good morning, Kat." I couldn't help but smile at her. Her face was still just as beautiful, just a bit scarred. But now, every time I looked at her she seemed prettier and prettier. Why can't that happen to me?

"Can we go shop later? I want a new dress for Sunday."

        "What's Sunday?"

"I'm going to visit the grandmas and grandpas at their special house." Her face always lit up when she spoke of the inhabitants of the old folk's home in town. She loved visiting them, and they loved seeing her smiling face every Sunday. The nurses say that she keeps the old folks alive and well longer. They're amazed at her ability to make every day even better than the last. She never has bad days. Mr. Disallia on the other hand seems to make every day worse than the last.

        "Yeah, I'll go ask Mama."

I walked down the hall to my mother's bedroom, thinking the whole way. I still wonder why it had to happen to Kat. Why not me? I probably won't graduate, anyway. She only had five weeks and one more whole school year left until she graduated. It was so unfair to her. she had a whole lifetime in her future. I on the other hand...

The door. Time to ask. Hopefully she doesn't have another horrible hangover. Even just a bad one I can deal with. My thoughts are interrupted by the opening creak of my mother's door.

"Oh, Haley. Why are you here?"

"I sort of live here." Yeah. This was a really horrible one.

"No, I meant why are you at my room? You never come out here."

"Oh. Well, I had a question. I still do, actually." Thankfully, it wasn't even real. No hangover... Kat would probably get her shopping trip. Just the thought of her in a dress she loved made me smile.

        "Ask away, Haleyboo."

"Mom, I'm thirteen years old. Please don't call me Haleyboo. And I wanted to know if we could go shopping."

        "What for and why?"

"Kat. She wants a pretty, new dress for Sunday when she goes to the old folk's home."

"Oh. Well, both of you go get ready."

"Oh my gosh, thank you!" I couldn't help it. I know it had been five years since I last did this... But I had to hug my mother.

"Come on Kat, let's get you all dressed up!"

        "Really?!"

"Really really!" And Kat let out an ecstatic squeal as her cheeks flushed with a rosy pink color. Seeing her that happy made my day. The whole ride to the mall she was nearly jumping up and down and she couldn't resist grinning at the thought of a new dress.

We finally reached our destination and she leapt out of the car. After two hours, she found an absolutely perfect dress. It was pink and sparkly, about knee length. She looked beautiful in it. It's as if the dress had been custom-made. When she saw it hanging on the rack, she knew it was the one. She squealed in excitement, grabbed it, and ran to try it on. This was the first dress with no straps and a low neck she had bought in a year and a half. We bought the dress, and I was released to roam the mall freely.

No, Kat's the one that got the dress. The whole thing is written from Haley's point of view, so as to give you every single emotion she feels and give her opinions on every event in the entire storyline.
