Familiar Room

Familiar Room

A Chapter by Rae

"Haley? Ms. Dawson will see you now."

"Yes ma'am." And I picked up my belongings, then walked through the wooden door frame into a never-changing, familar room. Too bad it belonged to the principal.

"Now, tell me, Haley. What made you punch your teacher in the face?"

"He was talking about my sister. Nobody gets away with talking about Kat."

"What's wrong with people complementing your sister?"

        "He wasn't complementing her."

"Oh. You still didn't have the right to punch him."

"Oh, yes I did. I had warned him before. He had it coming."

"How so? Please elaborate for me."

I simply made a motion towards my head.

        She returned a puzzled look.

         "She's brain damaged."

        "Oh... I see... Hmm..."

I had been blunt, perhaps too much. I had been emotionless, perhaps too much. I didn't think she believed me. That is, not until a silent, lonely tear slid down my cheek, graceful and perfect in all flawless movements. She whipped out a box of tissues, one of which I greatfully accepted.

"Well, I can't just let you go, but I am going to drastically lighten the punishment. Detention tomorrow, and that's all. But it will have to be all day detention, not just for your lunch period."

"Yes, ma'am. I'll be there, I swear. Thank you so much."

"Anytime. Just keep yourself in line."

        "Yes ma'am."

"I suggest you go on down to the nurse's office and get those knuckles looked at."

"Oh my gosh!" And I flew out the door, clutching my bloody knuckles.
