Acids and Bases

Acids and Bases

A Chapter by Rae

        "HALEY!"

        "WHAT?!"

        "Are you even paying attention?"

        "Uh... I... I..."

"You, you? Can YOU tell me what I just said about acids and bases reacting?"

        "Uh... A-acids... B-b-bases... I uh... Um-"

"NO. That is most definitely NOT what I just said."

        "But Mr. Di-"

"ENOUGH!!!!! Just begin paying attention! I would have thought you learned your lesson from your experience with your idiot of a sister."

        "Uh, excuse me?"

"Exactly. You'll end up just like her--In a fancy chair in the loony home. That'll be you too in a few years."

"Mr. Disallia, I would appreciate you leving Kat out of this." I felt the tears and anger welling up inside.

"Yes, and I would appreciate you paying attention once in a while instead of staring at the back of Joshua's head."

"Mr. D, I was looking at her too. And she paid more attention than I."

"Thank you Mr. Lorne, but this is her stupidity."

"Okay, Mr. Disallia, can we please just get on with the stupid lesson?"

"Ah, finally some intelligence from a Stephens girl. Maybe you WON'T get yourself nearly killed by being an even bigger moron than your sister."

"Uh, what did you just say?"

"Haley, just let it go. He didn't mean it I'm sure."

"Oh, he meant it, alright. I know he did."

"Ms. Stephens! Are you STILL speaking in my class?!"

"I'm sorry, it was me, don't fuss at Haley. Please."

"Shannon, always the giver. Maybe you'll arrange the next young Stephens girl's caretaker. Start the day she gets her license."

"That is IT!" And I couldn't help myself. I just couldn't. I mean, who does that? You just don't talk about someone's sister, especially if she's the way Kat is.

        "HALEY!"

        "Oh my gosh..."

         "What... Did you DO?!"

                "I... I'm sorry... I just..."

"Haley, he's the TEACHER. You can't do this!"

"I know, but he wouldn't leave her alone..."

        And then she walked in.

"What just happened in here? I heard an-OH MY GOSH! WHO DID THIS?!" And all fingers flew toward me. All but two-one belonging to Mr. Disallia, the other to my loyal best friend, Shannon Jamesly.

It's a funny story, the one of mine and Shannon's friendship. We actually met on the worst and best day of my life. Worst because of... Well, I'll get there later. But, Shannon made it better. It was her best and worst day, too. The place we met, though, is the weirdest. Would you ever guess that I met my very best friend in a hospital? Yeah, I wouldn't think so. But I did.

See, it was February 9th, 2005. How do I remember the exact date? Well, I remember the date because it was the night that Kat was nearly killed. That will be explained later on. But Shannon and I both remember the old Kat... And Mrs. Jamesly. That was the night that she was diagnosed with Leukemia. It's been almost exactly seven years since the diagnosis, and almost exactly three years since the chemotherapy finally began to get a response out of her. For about four years, everyone thought she was going to die. She never did. She's still alive and well, living at 9122 Elkwood Street, Enchanted Village.
