PrologueA Chapter by LyradJust an average day at school... until it isn'tThere comes a time in everyone's life when everything changes, and I'll never forget when it happened to me. It was a school day, like any other, and I was spending lunch on my own, like usual. I was always a loner by heart, even when I was a child, I just never seemed to get along well with anyone, and no one else seemed to like me either, they shunned me and made me an outcast, to this day I have idea why. But I learned to live with it. And anyway, I kinda like being alone, it suits me. "There she is," I heard a girl say as she passed by with her friends. "The Orphan." Her friends laughed as they continued to walk by. Yes, I'm an orphan. Something I get reminded of on a daily basis thanks to that b***h. The queen bee of this school, or so she likes to believe. She tried to make her uniform sexy to try and stand out from the other girls but it just makes her look s****y, not that anyone would ever dare tell her that, she's even made her little entourage wear the same thing. Their skirts were the shortest in the school, but still long enough to cover everything they needed to, they wore their ties loosely and their shirts had the top three buttons undone so they could show their cleavage. I liked to wear mine appropriately, my green plaid skirt reached just above my knees, shirt tucked and buttoned completely (apart from the top), and my tie fastened up to the top button, I also wore a dark green jumper and knee high black socks with black buckled shoes. I pulled my dark brown hair behind my right ear, nudging my glasses slightly but righting them instantly, and watched the three s***s walk away. They bothered me, which was weird as no one bothered me, I could usually brush off what most people say, but these girls were on my case everyday, the perks of attending a girls boarding school, gradually chipping away at the armour I had built up over the years until they finally made an opening. I shot them a dark look, even though they couldn't see it, and for a split second, I wanted them to die. That's when everything started to get... strange. The day continued like normal but the three girls seemed to act differently, it was almost like they were being drained of their energy, they stopped mocking the other students, they stopped flirting with the male faculty and they even left me alone, and all the while It seemed like I was becoming more energised, it was pretty good. But at end of our last lesson, as everyone made their way out to the courtyard, all three of them collapsed and all I could do was stand by and watch as a strong wind began to blow from out of nowhere. As they tried to stand the wind kept pushing them back down again, they screamed as a crowd began to gather, the force of the wind made the hair of all of the girls in the crowd whip about wildly and they screamed as the girls wearing skirts had to hold them down from the wind even though the three bullies and I were unaffected by the wind. The queen tried to reach out to me, or my ankles to be more accurate, and as she did her hand began to wrinkle, I looked to her face and it was ageing rapidly, the same was happening to her two followers, becoming more wrinkled with every passing second, their hair became ghostly white and their screams turned into pained moans, eventually they lost the strength to keep moving or making a sound all together. Then, suddenly, like a flash of lightning, the three girls disintegrated into dust. As the wind began to die down, the dust, which was now all that remained of the three girls, spiralled, like leaves on the breeze, and flew away and when it stopped there was nothing left of them. The girls in the crowd screamed as the realisation of what happened kicked in but I was still trying to wrap my head around what had happened. It was surreal, impossible to comprehend. My attention was drawn to the crowd as whispers began to circle around, I even managed to catch a few of them. "...did you see?" "...it was her! It had to be..." "...eyes were glowing..." What? Were my eyes really glowing? "...wasn't she levitating?" Levitating? Did that really happen? Did I really do this? What the hell's going on? "Orphan Freak!" They all started chanting that phrase, loudly, as well as finding anything they could to throw at me; books, stones, anything that came to hand they hurled in my direction. "No!" I screamed with a shaky voice. "D-don't come any closer!" I threw out my hands defensively. I succumbed to my fear and as it consumed me my hands sparked with electricity. I couldn't stop what happened next. My hands exploded with power, sending out a shock wave, forcing the crowd backwards, sending most them flying through the air while others simply fell to the ground. I struggled against this new found power as I tried to stop myself from hurting everyone, during which I caught my reflection in a window... I was horrified at what I saw. A large black figure stood behind me, giant skeletal wings with what looked like black feathers and leathery skin seemed to wrap around me, like they were forming some kind of shield, the figure itself seemed to be cloaked in shadows with its arms resting stoically by its sides and it's head looking down. I watched, terrified and unblinking, as it raised it's head up and looked back at me, in the reflection of the window, with eyes as red as blood and a face which had no other features... it was just a skull. "Do not fear, Delia Reynolds," A voice spoke inside my head, it echoed like a thousand voices were speaking at once. "I shall protect you!" The figure revealed a hand from its robe of shadows, a scythe formed in its hand, the sharp curved blade looking more fearful atop a shaft made from bones, which almost resembled a human spine. Upon seeing the terrifying weapon I suddenly found my voice. "Don't hurt them! They've done nothing wrong!" I screamed, pleading for their lives. "They're just scared!" The shadowy figure raised the sickle above it's head and added his other hand to the handle. "I'm not going to protect you from them," It revealed, it's voice void of any emotion. "I'm here to protect you from yourself." Without another word from either of us, not that I had the chance to say anything, the figure brought the scythe down, cutting me down like wheat in a field, it's blade sliced from the right side curve in my neck down to my left hip. I died quickly after that fatal strike... That was only the beginning...
