Teddy

Teddy

A Poem by Dayran
"

Thoughts of Childhood

"

Had a teddy bear when young,

Father liked to buy me toy guns.

Couldn't say which I liked better,

But Teddy identified with my thinking,

Would say if I did right or wrong,

Gave me a perspective.

I gave up on guns when growing up,

But will wonder what happened to Teddy.

I see him clear as day right now,

Orangey fur on a spongy body,

Had a nice feel on the squeeze.

Years later I had a real gun,

Didn't relate to my thoughts like Teddy,

But came to be related to a part of my body.

Couldn't tell apparently when young.

The love of guns had tossed out Teddy,

But it went on to sharpen my feelings.

Like I said, didn't know which I liked better.

sad and deceptively deep. The flow and the construction of the poem is well done but it's the theme and how it was expressed that really got me. THe struggle in life between the feeling of tenderheartedness/love/whatever(as symbolized by teddy) against resentement and anger. Not just resentment and anger in and of themselves but rather how one comes to see them as pragmatic survival traits as they get older and this hardens the tender heart.
That was just my interpretation. I'll be reading more of your work.
