The Conch of Coincidences

The Conch of Coincidences

A Story by Dayran

Why is that familiar?

There was a time … some years ago … when I couldn't account for what was taking place around me … in the environment. In an inexplicable way … it seemed to be catering to my every need to understand. It assured me … that there's an intelligence in the universe … that was guiding me. I called it … a series of coincidences. And that has … held up my need to … rationalize everything … like there ought to be a reason. I'm not sure if I understand it better … these days … but I can bring an expression to the phenomenon.

For what its worth … I would call the aspect of the individual … in contact with coincidences … as being in the darkest part of the mind … but without any … provoked or induced sense of fear. It is simply not knowing … like a baby looking around its cot … without taking any thought. Saivite practitioners … use ashes or a dye … to draw two vertical lines on the forehead … that meets … at a point between the eyes. Its the mark of … Govinda … or the playful adonais of creation. Practitioners sometimes … spend years … meditating in forests and caves … simply to still the passions … that cause excitation.

In association with the experience … the practitioners pointed to the conch … as a sea creature … in a shell … without its senses fully developed … other than … its basic physiology of tissue comprising an active cell organization … that works at a primary level of life … in reliance on cell dynamics. No doubt its an advancement on the basic amoeba … or single cell creature. Certainly the fish … would be an advanced cousin … of the conch … with eyes … and a lateral line that detects … scent and motion. The conch was thereafter … identified as a symbol of Vishnu … the God of preservation.

Does that make it feel like … the dawn of creation … before land based animals … as simple life in the oceans? Then surely … this is the beginning of the mind … that the individual goes to … in search of meaning … when he is lost as to purpose. We identify it as the unconscious in man today. And the way it works … is like a symbiosis … between the creature and its maker … in respect of its life on earth. In man … the experience comes to be identified simply as tissue dynamics on the skin … that covers the body.

As the perfect specie … in the world's experience … a man's tissue and its cellular organization … came to be viewed as the map of the universe … or in some cases as Zion … a city state of being. For the thinker however … it imposes a great responsibility … to understand and give expression … to his cognizance of the experience. It brings the experience to a certain statement … about the experience of man … from where he hopes to … relate to life … in his daily activities. Quite often … this has engaged the medium of divinity … to account for its inexplicable source of understanding.

In a woman … the experience comes close to a miracle of sorts … in the way … tissue … heart and mind … combine in the frame of a complex human organism … to create the wondrous experience of … the feminine mystic. Indics quickly named the woman … goddess … and drew from her … their inspiration for understanding the phenomenon of early mind … beyond the simple conch. Its apparently been a stable and reliable … heritage of the male experience. When the good book says … God took two ribs from Adam … to create the woman … as friend to the man … they were not kidding!

As the unconscious … the conch mind … ( blank … see Sid's Slang words ) … is the source of dreams in the man … and brings a waking view of the individual to his dreams. It is the symbiotic connection … of man and the universe … and in my case … it introduced itself one night … when I appeared to be an eel in the sea … and as I looked up … a giant conch appeared overhead. In viewing it … I experienced its morose gloomy personality … felt an unpredictability in its nature … and experienced fear … about my own disordered nature. Then everything stopped … as I recall the conch reaching out with its trunk-like mouth. It was the day … I stopped being afraid.

As I review the sensations … surrounding my fears … I realize that … it now defers to a certain relations with the universe and the world … as if … I am its son. It persuades me to stop thinking outside the circle of relations … that it has created in its cognizance. And that makes every event I encounter … feel like its entirely coincidental. Its introduced a … kamalam ( daze ) … to my personality … that I supervise closely … lest I be lulled into inactivity. And it sometimes makes me feel … like I'm in the world of Poseidon … where everything is related to everything else … and events take place with mere willing … without … a sense of I … and without the active engagement of mind.

Its the logic of goats … where Satan himself may rule … while dealing with … the delinquent logic of a self will. Its like a caterpillar saying … ' You have to be a butterfly to know ' … or a lion saying … ' We eat the antelope but when we die our bodies become grass and the antelope feeds on us.' Its formed the basis of faith in man … and as our faiths advanced to a institutionalized experience … it has come to include … a knowledge base … sometimes founded on science … that helps man to relate to the passions. It is the pastoral that the church guides on … in man.

I get intimations from time to time … that our dreams themselves … transform owing to the influence of the mind. No doubt our early dreams … abound with the aspirations of the anima … but in these times … we appear to transform our expectations … in line with human aspirations. There is a difference … and we see that in life … by the weariness we feel about … aggression and disorderly conduct. I feel intimations … about new possibilities for a better quality of life … that is not merely paradise … but engages our volition and willing … with joy … like we are a co-creator. Would be something … wouldn't it?
