PostponementA Story by DayranFreud Re-VisitedProcrastination is certainly the thief of time … hence when Freud referred to a postponing impulse in the individual … it brings into comparison … a social comment … and a scientific fact together … for review. The social view is of course founded on the living situations in daily life … while the scientific perspective … refers to a particular issue with regards to satisfaction of drives … and is a law of physical nature. In the comparison … we might find that its like … apples and oranges … with no conflict … even though they both refer to postponement.
In taking a closer look at the drive … in the reservoir of the ID … we find the potential of a zillion possibilities for impulses to rise that seek satisfaction. The way in which we allow that or deny them … has become the issue of inquiry … in these times. The ego acts as manager … to make those decisions … that create the stimulus for the cultivation of the drives. The personality … knowledge … and condition of the man then … becomes the determining factor … in what we allow into our lives.
In themselves … the reservoir creates the promise of things possible … and stimulates the mind … about the incredible nature of creation … and its ability to bring things into reality. The mind realizes that it has the power to guide that development … and undertakes it … in relation to issues … past … present … and future. While Freud made no mention of it … Indic view presents a picture of the conditions surrounding the reservoir … as being influenced by past histories … the Karma. It makes a statement about the … state of the reservoir … the identity of drives … and the personality of the ego … that are pre-conditioned based on the past.
Our views of what we intend or did not … forms a firm basis … in the way we view the pre-existing conditions of the reservoir. It creates an attitude … that may affirm certain drives … deny others as not our will … or are flabbergasted at others … in the unexamined manner in which … they suddenly appear to influence our lives. The individual in encountering such unknown factors … forms such a righteous sense of issues … that it goes a long way to affecting his view of justice … law … and the norms of society.
In coming to encounter news reports … of an individual with a gun in school … my impulse is to fall back to the view of the reservoir and the way he creates his responses to it. There's the individual who only identifies with that which he intended … and finds other factors extraneous to his will … and is therefore an encroachment on his rights. Then there's the one who tried his best to moderate and balance his will with the others … and then simply gave up … with exhaustion.
American society … in the collective expression of its will … views its reservoir experience as the achievement of the dream. In the institutionalized application of its will … it has referred to itself as … manifest destiny. Each creates a social support for the minds of the young … that views its own attitude on the reservoir. However despite the occasional aberration of human behavior … expressed in society … the vast majority … bring themselves to review the condition of the reservoir … sometimes with a history of the town they were born in.
Indic perspectives … identified the condition of the reservoir … first as a Leela … or play of creation. In its early activities … that play cultivated the ego … which then cultivated the mind … of man. Thereafter … in subsequent scholarship … they came to find that the mind … has grown in awareness of itself … and thereafter seeks to understand its source in the reservoir. That's raised the interest in meditation and yoga as ways to accomplish that.
But in all this time … the reservoir through the work of dreams … projects an image of itself … in the self-actualization of its progeny … that is viewed as the ultimate achievement of man. Obviously such a self-actualization … would contain certain criteria for its achievement … beginning with knowledge … physical tissue and organ development … and possibly changes in the landscape of its habitat.
Freud referred to drives that arise … possibly based on dreams of actualization … that the mind and ego postpone for a future achievement. But again … the wait .. the patience that we exercise … the subscription to rules … can indeed be exhausting … and the individual cracks. He rushes into a madcap … effort to achieve them … and will not brook any resistance on the way. That paints a pretty accurate picture of our lives in these times. The bull is out of the pen.
Our choices for managing the conditions of the reservoir … does include going all the way … to find out if its possible. Thereafter we need an exit plan … that's honorable … for us to back away. It works best of course … in finding out what it is … and then to accede to the common sense of doing the right thing. Its a labor of redemption sometimes … and sometimes its the sweet realization that we have been at the service of creation … to find what our limits are as humans.
Its quaint to think that the mind has an orgin that's sourced someplace mysterious in creation. It creates a great suggestion for the values of faith … as against the … self volition of the individual … based on knowledge. It makes for a great review of the choices and decisions we undertake in a lifetime … the friendships … family … career … and achievements. It adds to the content of the reservoir … and the Indics believe it brings us back to life someday … because we've had a great impact on its development. That's a thought.
