A Child's View of ... The View From The Top

"

The author of … ' The View From The Top ' … claims that it is a clear exposition of the state of passion of man … in these times. In fact … he claims … its so easy to understand … that even a child can do it. So we have here with us today … Samuel ' the twain ' Pickword … a 12 year old young man … from our public school system … who will explain to us … what the passage was about.

Interviewer :  Good evening Sam … how are you doing today?

Sam :  I am fine.

Interviewer : How was school today?

Sam : Teddy ate a frog.  We … we … took out his meat in the hamburger … and put a frog in …

Interviewer :  Right! … moving right along. Now Sam … you have read the passage … The View From The Top … and we would like to ask you some questions about it.

Sam :  This is like a test?

Interviewer : Yes … like a test … now … what does the passage say …

Sam :  You have something on your mustache … there … ( points )

Interviewer : ( Wipes his mustache with a napkin ) Okay … can we get on here? Sam … my question is … what does the passage say about God?

Sam :  God is a bear … Oh! … also a tiger.

Interviewer :  Why do you say that?

Sam : Because he is lazy … sleeps half the time … and is always dreaming.

Interviewer : It says that there?

Sam : Yeah! … and he is also a tiger … and … and … and … everybody is frightened of him.

Interviewer : Er …?

Sam :  ( gestures ) … because … they think he is so fierce …

Interviewer : … and he's not?

Sam :  Only when he smells flowers … then … then … then … he gets angry … because the flowers make him … dizzy … no … groggy …

Interviewer :  And why does it do that?

Sam :  ( Hides a smile ) … because his lollipop … cannot stand up …

Interviewer : … but he's a God … he can do anything.

Sam :  Er … er … he … cannot think … and he cannot know … and if God's mind doesn't work … then man … doesn't know.

Interviewer : Now that's an interesting thought … about the mind of God … where do you suppose it is?

Sam : In the intu … intuition … of the man … no … instinct … no no … intuition … that's right!

Interviewer : ( expresses surprise ) You may have a point there … young man … but let me ask you this … how did you come by this deep insight into life?

Sam :  Spiderman! … he lost his fight with … his friend's father … the Green Goblin … and he was worried that he would lose his girlfriend.

Interviewer :  So you think everybody should read Spiderman?

Sam :  ( shrugs ) I dunno … I prefer Beano and Dandy … but big people can read the Bible.

Interviewer : Do you read the Bible?

Sam : ( pauses ... and then shakes his head ) There are no pictures …

Interviewer : So you think that God is just a big cuddly bear?

Sam : Yeah! That's why the Romans didn't like him … because they don't play with toys.

Interviewer : And what do you want to say to people about faith in God?

Sam : They should just believe … its a matter of intuition … not reason …

Interviewer : ( frowns and raises his brows ) Er …?

Sam : ( with an attitude of resignation ) My brother told me that … he's bigger and he knows. And he says … its like mummy and daddy … making like we are not there. So we have to imagine that we are.

Interviewer : ( frowns and continues ) So the intuition is an instrument of children. Hmmm … and so Sam … what do you want to be when you grow up?

Sam : A scientist.

Interviewer : And what does science say about God?

Sam : ( shrugs ) I dunno.
