A Working System

A Growing Tree

"

I remember a year or two ago … when I came across a poem in WC … about a homeless individual. It was written by a young man … and he had expressed a deep sympathy for what he saw. At the same time … he took the opportunity to rant against the government and economic system … for allowing such things to take place.  It was a poem so obviously filled with emotion … that it seemed to have overlooked the fundamental basis of the way society is organized.

My comment on the review … gave a brief introduction to the basis of free enterprise … that we base our economies on. But he seemed ' gone over ' in his emotions … and couldn't bring himself to reconcile what we see in our daily lives … with the realities that we deal with. It pointed to my own attitudes on the issue … as I realized that despite my sympathies with him  … I was in a sense applying … a trained view … to the rationality of our lives.

In having raised a child … I have some past experience on the issue. In the 1968 Bobby Goldsboro song … ' Honey ' … he refers to this gal he knew … who had planted a tree …  but the season's snows came and nearly killed it. She  was the sort of gal given to loving unconditionally ... and would cry for the smallest reasons. Then one day the angels came ... and she was gone. The tree however ... kept growing.  Its certainly illustrative of the relations … we all get into.

I took the initiative one time … to follow the trail of the emotion … especially as it leaps the fence …  to see where it might go. What I saw amazed me … as it led to the dreams of mankind … our efforts to cultivate a life based on it … and the many improvisations we engage in … in order to do that. To many of us today … it may be possible to view a certain relationship we have with our sources of origin … the way we may have given it a name … and formed a specific understanding with it.

What we bring to it … is often hope and expectations … added by a liberal dose of positive attitudes … that views life as a process of growth … and we are for certain … going to get there … wherever that might be. But on those peculiar conditions … when we face an infraction with the passions … as when a dog or a tree dies … we sometimes form the greatest will of obsessions … about our refusal to accept. It nurses a grief that goes into the nature of our lifetime … that mutates into several other associated issues.

What man has obviously attempted … is to bring an informed view of any situation … and to create an equal subscription to the facts … as we would the utility of passions that we engage. Has it been at all possible to arrest the downward spirals of emotions … and to raise them by our guide on moderation? No doubt we are still working at that.

Indic literature refers to the inevitability of the ups and downs … of a lifetime's experience … like the pattern on brain waves … that creates an oscillation between two points. They advise that ...we maintain a middle line between the ups and downs … and regulate ourselves that way. But I wonder if such a person would ... abandon all caution ... and laugh out loud … even at birthday parties … and record the experience in a photo … he might view at another time?

Is life therefore … factually a situation of tears and laughter? Certainly a young man … growing up … hopes for an optimistic sense of opportunities … that would bring him close to his ambitions. If it doesn't work out … we credit ourselves for the effort … and  move on down the line … to that which draws our new interest. In that way … we sometimes come to the place of the source of dreams … and it creates a tremendous opportunity for our life force … to view and understand itself.

Perhaps that would function to moderate our despondencies … in a natural manner … and overcome our past ignorance on the issues. We are after all reliant on a … ' sampradaya '  of body and life … that has been evolving from the ignorance  of our anima origins … to the hope of the light of understanding. And we seek a civilizing influence to do that.

At which point do our dreams … knock off the facts and realities of the physical laws? In transferring from the anima to man … we obviously miss a certain part of the passions … that is integral to the quality of life. The objective would obviously be to find that … and to bring a degree of understanding regarding what that is. Perhaps we may even evolve into another specie in order to do that.

What appears consistent about humanity … is that we have always brought ourselves to engage and deal with all that we encounter … and to find ways to make things better. I certainly think we are going to be doing just that. Its a self help approach … learning from trial and error … and in that way … we have set up the democratic ideal … free enterprise … and the innovations that has helped to free the mind to view itself … with greater interest.

I had this curious sensation … one time … when viewing the constellations … to inquire about man's place in the universe. I simply responded with the comment … that man is probably the most orderly organization of the possibility of life … and its advancement into greater forms. If the universe cherishes a sense of its accomplishment for life … its certainly placed it in the human specie. Its on account of the way … man subjects himself to the waves of his trials … and returns to  commence a new possibility.
