A Matter of Intelligence

A Matter of Intelligence

There's a curious suggestion in the psyche … that the passions built the mind. Certainly in viewing our lineage from the apes … we find that difficult to deny. Then as the mind grew … it upstaged the passions … only to fall on account of its failure to complete. Thereafter … the passions raised the mind back up on its feet … and this time built an appreciation in the mind … as to its origins.

Its a logical tale … and points to the relationship … between the mind and the passion. It brings a great deal to our notions regarding individual liberty … freedom … and equality. It points to the obligations the mind perceives about itself … its volitional responses to love … and how in a manner of human conduct … we diminish our attributes regarding intelligence … in favor of sharing our priorities … with the passionate appeals of the human condition.

Its hardly surprising therefore to find that many people build a defense against the passions … exalt the intelligence … and maintain a cynical attitude about love … or risk losing their experience of independence. But it is possible to do more. We can bring the two together … in a fair view of their roles … and understand the specialization … they undertake in respect of our evolving life's condition.

If something is left for want in the relation … it may be an understanding … of the special and exclusive nature of each … and to know where one stops … and the other takes over. In that … it is the mind that must take the initiative on issues. It must wean itself from its past dependency on the passions … and then grow to its full potential … and thereafter return to the passions … and set it on its own independent impulse … as an equally vital faculty in the human condition.

There's much that comes in between … in the way they relate to each other … but I wish to refer to one key aspect of the relations … that appears to influence all else. This is the attitude of selfishness … in the mind … but is transferred to the passions … and like a game of ping-pong … is constantly exchanged between the two. A closer view makes for a great revelation.

In our early experience of intelligence … in our unmindful youth … it extolls the virtues of selfishness … and insists on driving the chariot of the body … through its activities. In a key aspect of its attitude … it finds considerable assurance in the fact that the body will someday die … and not impose itself to take over from the mind … the task of creation's will on life. Hence it attributes all its actions … in the service of itself … affirms its will … and finds comfort in the thought … that it is doing so.

The passions actually bring themselves to serve the mind in the thought … and form such incredible dreams that are possible in an extrapolation … of the workings of the mind. Quite often … this works great for a while … then collides with reality … and falls distracted into a ditch. No doubt the mind feels let down … because the body passions … exercise a new enthusiasm of their own … as if it denies now its mortal nature … and threatens the mind with suggestions of its own fallibility.

The mind thereafter loses its experience of independence … perhaps colored a little … with its privilege to do so … and loses its self esteem. What happens then in the life of the individual … is a period of rehabilitation … to take a second look at mind and passion … and perhaps to avail ourselves of the considerable studies … we have undertaken as a community … with scientific methodologies … on the issues. We are welcomed … as an individual to verify and validate … such studies … in relation to our own life's experiences … and thereafter … perhaps to lead ourselves forwards … with our own initiatives.

Science Saves! … we might find that billboard on top of buildings in time to come … but its not without its limitations … in its application to the living human condition. Thereafter … the individual takes responsibility for the organization … and methodology … of his pursuits. Its a lifetime of observation … of the workings of the mind … and the instruments of the passions. It is in some way … the ultimate science … the moderator between the mind and passion.

Will the individual recover? In my experience … yes … subject to the validity of my initiatives … of the study on my person … and tested daily by the physical environment around me. What I experience as passion today … was until 10 years ago … an abyss of flames. Normal? No … not quite … but its not Nietzsche's superman either. Its normal to view the potential achievement as an incredible perfection … the ' final release ' of the Indic … from the clutches of attachment. However in getting past its hurdles … it appears entirely ordinary with the normal workings of the world … nature … and man.

Perhaps what's experienced as most difficult … is the wedge of mistrust … that comes to position itself between mind and passion. Science … and religion … point the way … but its man who has to take on the living experience of life's phenomenon … and ultimately rely on his own primal passions … and his latent intelligence … to come to a realization of himself. And in encountering his mind of selfishness again … to know that its an instrument of planning in the evolving life of the individual. And its his job … to add to its efficiency.
