The Lioness of Chios

The Lioness of Chios

A rumor of chaos

I suppose everyone may have their own version of the ultimate one of the universe. This is mine. I call her the Lioness of Chios. It appears to me that I have cultivated a certain devotion to that … and it occupies my attention today … as the creator God of the universe. It just came up … and I'm still working on it … but it strikes me as the one reality I have been pursuing my entire life to-date. It also introduces to my thinking an element of faith … which I will have to refine in the days ahead.

The word Chios … is coined from chaos … and in having looked into the nature of reality … particularly from the view of the human experience … I am no longer intimidated by chaos. It is the transformation that nature goes through … over the seasons … and while it can be incredibly threatening and packed with anxiety … it is a part of life's creative broth … and it teaches that everything has a reason.

In a universe that commenced with a quality that resembled the milk of human kindness … I can't help but feel that … its anxieties are on account of its own unmitigated kindness. Sometimes this appears to us in nightmarish proportions … and shakes the tree of reason and understanding … but leaves its roots intact for us to grow again.

I figure she lives as a householder … wife and mother … in some part of the world. A living person. Her husband has had occasion to surrender his will to God … and serves as his servant in all affairs. Her son takes up to men of learning and of the cloth … creates an admiration for them … and brings himself to conjure the possible knowledge these men have of the world. Incredible as it sounds … his conjecture is not too different from the knowledge … these men of wisdom profess … with the exception of the forms of its content.

The mother grapples with the needs of the daily household … with no special help from anyone. Outside her home … armed gunmen sometimes walk the streets … for the cause. Her son is always saying that the world will handle all its problems on its own … and builds an assurance in the mother … that is partly unfocussed thinking and partly dreams. Her son's innocent beliefs turn out to be true … when the son of a farmer takes over the mantle of leadership of the world. He promises a more compassionate government and peace.

In the mother … her childhood dreams suddenly awake and take on a reality of their own. Her life is like a fantasy come true. However a few years later the news breaks the story of the assassination of the farmer King. She is shattered but worse was still to follow. Some months later … an elite military unit bursts into her father's home and executes him for the assassination of the leader. She used to adore him and blames herself for his death. Now as the oldest child … she assumes responsibility for her mother and sisters. Her life becomes a drudgery of work and concern … and her days are filled with fighting for every ounce of strength to carry on.

In the meantime … the world is thrown into a chaos of sorts … with confusion reigning the societies … while they waited for news of a new leader to emerge. The death of the leader raised all manner of inquiries into the nature of life … social norms … and the question of the right way forward. There were constant struggles … trial by combat … and the old ways of the world seemed to fall apart in the light of new experiences and knowledge.

The trials that everybody went through … cultivated a new boldness to deal with issues … and like the fire of the crucible … burnt off the dross … to allow for the light of reason to shine through. In time … such a person … emerged from the days of chaos to take the helm of leadership. She raised the veils from the eyes … and brought the light of reason to the eyes of mankind. They called her the ' Lioness of Chios ' … after the place of her birth. She couldn't believe her eyes … she had thought that after the death of her father … her life was going all the way downhill … but here she was … leading the free world … into the future … with what everybody said was the will of a lioness.

Her story illustrates an important theme of life. In the final analysis … our dreams of hope and expectations are not just about ourselves … they are also about the world. The impulses and qualities that form a part of our thoughts are also the thoughts of all … it is us and it is also generic. What one man can achieve … so can another. What one is … is a reflection of the billions of people out there … who form the environment of the world in which we live.

In retrospect … she realized that the death of her father … had galvanized her … to discover qualities about herself … which she never knew existed. The loss of something is always substituted by gaining another. Its the timeless tale of man … searching for hope … but only to discover that hope lies in us … in our faith and knowledge … and our ability to apply it to life.
