Ariyamala

Its a tale set in the Indic landscape of holy men … sages … and saints. The central personality is the Sage Kathavarayan. Its the classic issue of old age … and its many hidden attachments … especially … to the quality of youth as represented by the princess Ariyamala. Its a bit of the Sage and the Princess theme. It followed a period of recovery in the Indic national psyche … when the wars were over … peace reigned … and the trials of accountability were about to begin.

The Sage is reported to be descended from a long line of holy men in the Indic tradition … that brought to the Indic society the Mahabarata and the Bhagavad Gita. However as illustrated in the life of the Sage Kathavarayan … he relied on two sources of inspiration … for his works of song and literature. One was from the heart of passion and the other … the science of physical laws. The Princess was obviously ... the heart.

He referred to his two sources as his two muses. One he called ' what I'll never forget ' and the other he referred to as ' the mind that plays with physical laws.' Today in the world … we observe an unmistakable identity of the ' never forgot ' of the old ways … representing in large part the culture of traditions …. the pagan and wicca. And the ' playing mind ' is certainly sourced from scientific studies … that's today active in the West.

The Sage wrote his songs in a certain relationship between these qualities … expressing as he did the love for the arts ( nyana ) as well as his adoration for science ( vinyana ). But the point of discernment became a little difficult fo the Sage to deal with. The issue referred to a mater of the human condition … that he relied on for his translation of the impulses … and the eros natures that served as his inspiration. It was a time of the newly realized joys of peace … and it appeared to his unmitigated impression that both the ' never forgot ' and ' playful mind ' were one.

The term Katha means ' word ' and varayan … ' the coming sage.' Put together it refers to thought and speech … that is expressed … in a sub-conscious manner … spontaneous and unmindful … about the nature of life and its activities. A mala is a garland and the Indic references to the garland was always about the entire family of cakras. However the term Ariyamala … is set in a deliberate coincidence of the phonetic sound associated with the word Ariya. The word has two meanings … it may mean ' cool ' … as in was hot before … or it could mean ' knowledge ' as the more popular term Aryan indicates.

Hence the way that the Ariyamala … or creative impulses of man … is handled and expressed is conditional upon the stable and peaceful nature of its temperament. It is a mark of the quality of the expression that conveys a communication … in a manner that is fairly reflective … of universal suffrage and the truth of our lives. It is a combination of the subjective and objective qualities … brought together by man … to form a point of view … fashion … or a flavor of life … that finds its way into expression … in our societies. Thereafter it enters the realm of memories … to serve us as the ' never forgot ' in a long line of chains … that we refer to as the world's historical timeline.

It is sourced in the collective will of man … and finds its expression in the socio-physical quality of our lives in the world. As the will of creation … it is expected to represent … in its creative energies … both the knowledge of science and the arts … combined and expressed as the life force in the living experience. However … the issue becomes rigorous when society falls for a bias with the writings of a bard or poet … especially one that talks the birds from the trees to sit on his finger. The credentials of the bard are therefore thoroughly examined for balance and fair temperament.

The life of the bard … both in the West and the East … is therefore a delicate expression of the average truth of the world. The man himself is often representative of life's standards of the times … and revolves around the line of the median … of concerns regarding the world's affairs. This obviously changes from age to age … and it is expected that the bard reflect such changes. There are however no rules of ethic that anybody should adhere to such writings of a bard. It is entirely dependent on the freewill of individuals … and their collective volition as a society. In that … the Indic … believes that both God and man are served by the possibilities of dreams that arises in our hearts … and the imperatives of knowledge in the mind … in an optimization that is highest.

In recent times William Shakespeare ( 1564 - 1616 ) … fits the bill … as a bard of the Kathavarayan. Its significant from our experience of him … that English society went into a period of restoration … and the pilgrim fathers sailed to the new world ... in a coincidence of events. The phrase … ' The world's a stage and all the men and women actors ' … is an expression that comes to our thoughts often. Its reminiscent of the difficulties the Sage had … in discerning between acting and physical natures.

A Kathavarayan comes and goes in the affairs of the world … but its quite a thing to know that such an event may be imminent … and for man to view the workings of a bard … in the cultivation … and preservation of the world's experiences. It engages the man in its work … as a preliminary interest in doing the same … particularly in managing the comic. It fulfills what the Indic refers to as Kalainithi … or the cause of the living arts in the conduct of life.
