Chap 21 : Fire on the WindA Chapter by DayranA Drum and a SongIts an old superstition in the Kampongs … or Malay villages. Its about seeing a small flame fly in the night air … about 20 feet from the ground. A variation of the theme … is about a lizard cut in half … that makes its rounds in the lush pastora of the island of Borneo. The man who witnesses such events ' dies ' … apparently in a figurative way … in order to be reborn. Its a message from the subtlest part of our senses … communicated as anticipation to the mind.
Such subtle energies from the workings of our senses … function in a curious way as to guide our own development in life … for the forward progression of the human experience. It appears to our minds sometimes … like a naturally existing intelligence ( nei ) … collates our varied pieces of knowledge … and extrapolates them into a field of possibilities about the nature of events to occur in our life … in line with our realities. Its not dissimilar to the definitions of genius … as a free mind given to postulation.
In our normal and waking hours … we sometimes encounter such a display of the ' nei ' … but we accord that to a vanity about ourselves … and do not examine the issue further. To delve further into the experience … is to encounter the sparkle of impulses … that softly burst in our minds … like fireworks … leading us to a sweet chase of such impulses … in the pursuit of our lives. It is the door to the world … into what I have come to refer to as the ' OVA ' … experienced as intelligence … as it influences our contact with the subtle … and refines it for greater understanding by man.
The experience of the ' OVA ' … engaged in by the usual regulatory disciplines of the passions ... produces an effect … much like a man at a desk … creating a high effectiveness at work … and any engagement we come across. In application to relations … it creates a reflection of the loved one … in a shared intimacy of knowledge and understanding … that is a secure affirmation of the passions at work … in the world. However … beyond these … in the individual self reflection of the person … in relation to the organization … and purpose of life … it produces a devotion to the ways and means … of eventually achieving … the realization of the dream for all.
In refining the object of the passions … he views in the coherence of the vision it produces … the way ahead … at the time and place in his life. In doing so … he realizes the need to combine with the qualities of the mind … and to draw from it … the intimations of life's achievements … in all its endeavours. That feels a little like a lady dressed in a Halston … running to catch the streetcar. It looks forward to arriving well groomed … with vibrancy.
Such purposes that we apply ourselves to … takes many forms. From the journalist in the Spanish civil war … to the man on the park bench … who slides over … to let you sit … they all … know what love is … and the many ways we perceive that in us. In understanding what it is … we help to move it forward. In not understanding it … we let it move us. Either way … we come around later … to arrange all the flowers in the basket again someday … for the bouquet of our existence.
We view the world around us … see its tremendous vastness of experience … achievement … successes … and it sometimes causes us to moan our lack of preparation … as if … to tease us … into doing something about it. And quite often we do … sometimes accepting the invitation onto that bucking bronco of uncertainties … and gird ourselves into position. Its the ride of a lifetime.
