The work of the Muses and the communication of their understanding to human society has been invaluable throughout history. Of particular significance in this study has been the experience of division by man which today dogs our affairs as the experience of schizophrenia. Its the cause of many conditions we encounter … such as paranoia and psychosis … eventually leading to the Socratic process of catechism in speech.

 

The period 800 BC to 500 AD is significant with regards to the beginnings of the human condition. It commenced with the writings of Hesiod on the originally existing condition of union in the experience of man … that gave us the insight into the theogony, women, works and days and Herakles. But the hero Herakles … fighting with Ares … could not prevent the division from tearing apart society. It eventually brought about his death in a blaze of flames.

 

The Mahabarata … written in the same period … affirmed the need for the division and created an acceptance of man's fall. Homer affirmed the same in the Iliad … Asclepius in communicating his views on King Agamemnon, the fight against Thebes and his reference to the two serpents of life made the division real in our lives. This ushered into human society the powerful influence of the Hellenistic outlook that focused greater attention on the home.

 

The succeeding period … with reference to the mysterious 'Angel Gabriel' … brought into cultivation the rituals … a practical experience of faith by man in respect of his former condition … practiced as the Christian faith, the beginnings of Taoism, Hinduism and thereafter Islam. However any suggestions during this period about the possibility of a re-union of the divided human condition may have fallen on deaf years. Human society went into the great divide … with differences in language, food, clothing and God.

 

Writings by Ovid on the need for a Metamorphosis … Virgil on the need to found a new civilization of the world in the Aeneid … occupied our attention. Thereafter when the Claudian Rape of Proserpine emerged … it appeared to have sealed the fate of man to the break-up … we thereafter improvised with the muses and continue to do so till today.

 

Now … as we turn the corner into the 21^st Century … we must be concerned about new possibilities in the achievement of man. Such new possibilities are unfolding even as we speak … even if they are in the raw … we need to find a way to make contact and understand … and prevent ourselves from pushing it away. A new attitude of trial and error holds great promise for our refinement of the dream.
