The Rock of Norm Series : VII

"

The quest for norm comes to rest strangely enough on the sounds of speech and the intonation they bring to our hearing. Is it possible to know from the sound of the voice the authenticity of the remarks of a person? Is the person'e expression true … from a deep conviction in himself? Do we know that? … are we relating on the issues in a consensus? These are the questions we pursue.

There are people who'll tell us that any speech intonation can be practiced and brought to expression in a trained manner. That may relate to parrots and the reason we term as ' Sound ' the experience of inlet waterways … it echoes the sound of ship's horns.  But what is the right sound today?

For a long time the Indic population relied on what is termed as the ' sound of Nyana.' Its a deep guttural voice that comes from the diaphragm and implies a bodily and muscular involvement in the speech of the person. On account of that it indicates that the person speaks from experience of the issue. That may be trained too by ' singing inside the throat,' a new practice growing in popularity in the west.

In contrast a person sometimes speaks in a tentative manner even with a grasp of the rudiments of the facts of the case. But he makes his point clearly and in a social manner.

The former implies a need to convince the listener, the latter indicates an opinion expressed and is left to the listener to pursue the reality of it. The former is used to encourage adoption of the guide and is engaged by parents, teachers, policemen, lawyers and the like. The latter is a matter of communication between equals and builds friendship.

For young people growing into the world experience, they express the sound of friendship naturally but they also seek to establish their own stable natures and often reach out to the guttural. As a result in the choice between personal success and friendship we realize that we are the architects of our own destiny. Hence in a situation of failure we find the same guttural voice used against us as reprimand.

And then there are those who say … ' what is true cannot truly be expressed ' … they withdraw from the involvement in the sound of the speech and watch as a witness as the internal speaker speaks the words of their comment. They claim that no one can take 100% responsibility for their actions … that its in the hands of God.

Until a person is able to see into the cultivation of reality and understand the nature of their self they will seldom come to commit to every word they say. We may all be in the same boat of norm as regards that. It plies in the social streams of our conscious … until we all get to where we want to go. It may even imply that we speak so that we may come to understand ourselves.
