Cullen grew up in a community that was like the society of Avonlea. He led a life surrounded by beauty, except for the folks from Swanea. They were black as coal in appearance and this bothered Cullen that someone in association with him was denied the joy of beauty that he took for granted. He sought to speak to God about it.

At first he asked himself these questions but couldn't find an answer for them. But at age 14 while in school his favourite English teacher gave him high marks on his essay about poor people. When he left for home that day, he felt a presence that stayed with him thereafter. About three months later he found that the presence was like an invisible friend clueing him in on everything others were saying.

The following year Cullen found himself relating to this individual. Softly at first, like speaking to himself but realizing that its someone else.

The friend intimated to him that he couldn't perform certain actions in the world and that he depended on Cullen for that. Cullen couldn't really understand what that meant but applied himself to the future with expectations. He realized that his friend was like a God but at Church, his friend did not bring himself to relate to the God idea, he was simply stoic. In turn Cullen was likely to forget his friend on occasion the way that he related to his friends and his schooling.

At 16, Cullen experienced something quite strong and aggressive. In a quarrel with his friends on issues pertaining to the Black society in the country, Cullen had come close to a fist fight with one of them. He went off and was close to tears. He spoke to ' God ' and asked why he was put through a great deal of challenge. There was no reply other than an intimation that he'll know someday.

In a skiing accident that winter, he broke his arm and had to put it in a plaster cast. He felt decrepit and inadequate. He sensed that others looked at him with some pity and pained expression. But he encountered something he had not experienced before. While in a cast he was prepared to let others help him a little. In engaging activities, he realized he had to focus without the use of his other arm. In that it made him less than perfect.

He realized then that his sympathies for the black folks from Swansea was misplaced. He thought he was perfect and wanted others to be perfect. In that he didn't understand the ways of the world and the work of God in it.

That night he went to bed with a prayer on his lips. He mumbled softly to God that God ought to take more care of the people in the world because he may not be in that way fully capable. But he told God to call on him if God needed any help.
