The sign said, ' The Lost City,' so mother figured it was an archeological find of some kind. Imagine their surprise when they walked into the show to find a U-shaped street that represented an old part of a city, seedy from neglect and housing the city's wayward businesses.

The street was lined with bars, gambling houses, brothels and crack dens. On the pavements, they encountered prostitutes, transvestites, drug dealers and purveyors of child pornography. A voice overhead on the PA said ' the odor from the drains is not urine, its apple cider vinegar.' The signs on the business outlets had unusual names. There was ' The Fox Bar and Restaurant,' ' Tucana's Grill,' ' Surabaya Cafe,' and ' The Mushroom Inn.'

Mother held her nose nevertheless but the kid complained incessantly about leaving. " A new take on the haunted house,' Father commented. " Whatever will they think of next?' mother replied.

They had to jostle their way past some of the residents on the pavements and were sometimes rudely bumped into by drunks and derelicts. Father figured he'll apply himself to the rationale behind the exhibit. It certainly was new and brought home something that a life in the suburbs would rather forget.

Then on the way out, they were guided into a room to collect their wallets, car keys, wrist watches and in some cases spectacles. Father was stunned at what had just happened. He realized then that he had completely shut off and dismissed all the sensations he encountered. On the PA, the announcer informed them to check to see that all their valuables were intact. ' And remember,' it said,' a city is only lost by our lack of attention to what is simply around us.'
