Found in the Store : II

I suppose what a store keeper would do is to record an inventory of all the items in the store. Perhaps he would also prioritize the important items and store them in a locked cabinet. Such as ? Well, there might be quite a few but for now I believe the most critically important item for human survival would be the mug.

It was brought into the store after the age of apes and the dawn of man. It used to be a coconut shell, then a sea shell and thereafter a horn. But today its a porcelain variety with a face painted on it.

Calling the face a mug is a rich tradition that led to the grail and its experience of finding itself divine. In England, it is referred to as a gullible person or fool. Elsewhere, it is associated with the face, mouth, an exaggereated expression or a thug. As an expression, in the US, they say a liberal is a person who hasn't been mugged.

But inventory aside, a young man growing up relies somewhat on the way he looks. It supports his confidence, announces his wants and his understanding of the opportunities. Quite often it works out just fine. At other times, it creates that curious sensation of running after something only to see it fade away like mists. Then when we give up and return it pursues us.

But despite what anybody will try to convince someone else, the store keeper's record says that nobody has actually seen the face. People have however, in the normal course created colorful legends, gone into fainting spells, pretended to be smug or simply felt weak at the knees.

So the thing to do might be to stay self confident and if anybody stops you and asks if you have seen the face, just say, ' No, I can't say I have.'
