A Young Man's StarsA Story by DayranTales of Mystical Poets : I
I must have been about fifteen. Its when I first came to a perception of myself and the family. It just happened then but it is only now that I come to record the nature of the experience in the context of what I understand.
How does a fifteen year old think? ..... by the light of the stars. There was Virginis ( Lon 298.1 Lat +61.3 ) high to the north of where I lived. She cast a virtuous will to all that I experienced, persuading me to be honest, straightforward and direct. And when I had trouble keeping it up, she would summon Leonis ( Lon 250.6 Lat +70.8 ) the lion to keep me brave.
Curiously Virginis matched my mother's personality and Leonis that of my moody but tough looking older brother. It was a carefree life lived close to nature in the village amidst the coconut palms, fish ponds and the sea, about a stone throw away. I was growing up in the assurance of a benign nature, economically dependent on my parents and the liberty of friendships which I thought would always be there. Right .... straightforward but also naive and too quick to believe anything anyone would say. Why would they lie?
Velorum ( Lon 283.1 Lat +8.6 ) shines directly over the house I grew up in. Its the eternal youth, Vela, complete with the spear of virtue and an upstanding posture as an honest young man. His friends keep company with the nymphs Carinae a little south of my position. Perhaps I did a little of that, in secret, for when I entered my pre-adult years the wolf, Canis ( Lon 242.6 Lat -6.5 ) came up and brought a willfulness for living a full life.
There was Corvi ( Lon 291.1 Lat +44.6 ) the comic who is always throwing a curve. He stayed at the back of my mind and I was likely to take most things with a pinch of salt.
In looking back, I'm reminded of the virginal Indian Goddess they call ' Athi Parasakthi ' who is accompanied by a lion. Her counterpart in the West is Cybele. Indians refer to her as the primodial creative force of the universe. Curious isn't it? That when you spend a lifetime learning to understand yourself, it isn't very different from what our bards have been singing about all the time.
