' The issue facing a lot of kids today is the multitude of choices available to them. They could be this or that or anything they bring their attention to. It could be anything ..... it's hard to make a choice.'

 

The counsellor appeared nonchalant but was not without a sense of attention to Peter's inquiries. He continued.

 

' You'll have to decide first what you want ..... what you think is a career you are prepared to committ to for the rest of your life. Obviously, it has to be a big part of your interest. But if you can't, there are careers that cater to someone looking to do everything ..... a corporate coach, project manager, trainers, a writer, painter, dancer, singer and so forth.'

 

Peter found this kind of talk inviting. It catered to his meglomanic sensations of himself and what he expected of his future experiences. ' Is this wrong?' he suddenly blurted out. ' Why do I feel its wrong?' he asked.

 

'Did you speak to your father about it?' the counsellor asked. ' No,' he replied.

 

He leaned back in his chair and thought about it for a while. ' I was brought up to think that's wrong!' he responded, a smile breaking out on his lips. ' But I guess with today's kids, I'm prepared to say something more..... Be yourself ..... find a way to organize all that ambition into something coherent and orderly .... don't give up on doing that ..... be your own counsel even when others are putting you down. Are you prepared to do that for the sake of your ambition?'

 

' I've had this turning around in my head the entire time. This is the first time I've brought expression to it. It feels real and the obvious challenges I feel will be real.

 

' You got that right,' he replied.
