Peter dived into the pool. He would normally do two laps. It helped him to make contact with that part of his passions that he thought made the decisions in his life. He wasn't sure who or what they were. He suspected that it had something to do with his mother.

It occured to him that as a young man growing up, he wasn't truly expected to know things. On occasion he was hurried to say something.... but in a broad sense, he experienced a great latitude in the way he committed himself to things. He surmised therefore that there ought to be someone out there for people like him. Someone who was like him.

Understanding, he figured consisted in simply letting himself stand still and watch the grass grow. In a perfect world, when the grasses needed water, it would rain. But on occasion one has to watch for the curve ball and be prepared to deal with it.

He reached the opposite end and kicked off to return.

Where he combined the two experiences of normal germination and his carefree attitude, he felt a sense of the subtle, like how seashells carry on a life in which they don't see or speak of their wants and intentions. Yet it was always there.

Trevanian, the thought engaged him as easily as the way he glided through the water. Shibumi, the quality of being just so. He rose from the pool, rinsed off and left for home.
