Behold the futureA Poem by Christy HauckMy first attempt at a sestina, also for my Creative Writing class
Let the fox be the animal to show the way It has hidden itself well beyond mortal mankind reach Into an untouched realm of nearly lost bliss For too black and mottled the mortal world has become Mother Nature, she has wept as mortals steal life The fox, in its cunning, knows the life saving secret It has known for generations what lies in the secret Tiny, silent knowledge filled paws lead far away For the fox has always known where to hide every life The one for this generation starts its life on the foggy stretch of pale beach It trots along, sniffing at remants and secerts that have yet to become Revealed from the crevices of its favorite bliss Trailing behind the fox comes Mother Nature with a soft kiss Though she too knows what mankind and mortals do, she does not regret What mankind has done since she knows what it will become The fox’s paws know when to tip the scale of life and how much mortals weigh Mankind is obsolete in the fox’s eyes, nothing more than another leech The fox sees no reason for mortal mankind to exist, in any life Mother Nature knows of a reason, but doesn’t want to upset this fox’s life She watches the fox run along the pale strand, shocking in its bliss The fox runs into the waves and runs back to shore, just outside the waves reach The waves whisper gently, though only the fox and Mother know their secret The look before leaping into the realm of mankind’s sway Both weep mental tears at what it has become Mortal lies and mankind abuse have turned the world into a slum The fox takes a step forward, intent on forcing a new way of life Mother stops it, hoping that mortals will find their own way Snubbing Mother, the fox turns tail to head back to bliss It knows it has other things to do; protecting the secret, Keeping it safe, managing it for future generations to teach Mother stays behind in the polluted mortal realm; she has her own thing to teach What the fox does not know, is the true form the mortals will become And though the fox guards it, she knows a twist to the secret She knows that mankind will evolve to give—and not take—life She lets the fox play where it is, soon the mortal realm will be bliss What makes her cry now is that is still far away While the fox wishs for a new way of justice just out of reach Mother Nature sits in the future bliss and smiles at her personal secret A new life will enfold gently from what the old one will become © 2008 Christy Hauck |
