Twenty Years Down - (The Beatles)

Twenty Years Down - (The Beatles)

A Poem by David Lewis Paget
"

It seems an appropriate time to re-air this one, as the Beatles released their new digitized versions of their music yesterday.

"

All you left were your plastic pieces
Cloaked in covers of light and sound,
Whatever happened to spill our leases,
Wreck our passage and check our treaties
Twenty years down?

Often I’ve thought of the way you made it
Poked your tongues at the hand-me-downs,
Sang your songs of the maid, and laid it
Track on track, and the way you played it
Close to the ground.

And we all laughed at your small perfection
Simple lads in a world of wine,
We caught the spell of your sweet confections,
Song on song of your funny mentions
Of you, of me and mine.

The world was well that you had your way in,
Nobody hurt, or suffered or lost,
Nothing we thought that we had no say in,
Love was the word that we thought to play in
That took no count of the cost.

But now your shadows lie dim within us
And every laugh has a shattered sound,
Left to the rest of our lives, we spin us
Ever the wake of the dream that in us
Ran aground!

Nice poem, David. Different from your usual, but then again, you wrote it 25 years ago! I like the plays on words and references to "albums." (Did she just say album? What the heck is that? She must be old! :)
"It's been a hard days night....and I been working like a dog..........but when I get home to you.....you make me feel all right" :)

Many of us may guage the present in the context of the past, and many of us may judge today's music according to what WE grew up with. Each generation has its own preferences, its own predilections. It is all about one's level of innocence in the end...

Your style is a model of clarity David, your prose so smooth it goes down like a vintage wine.
You are a literary phenomenon.

I grew up during the beatles rein, I know I may sound crazy but they were not my favorite, I leaned more to the side of the Monkey's. Davy was my heart throb. I loved their songs. Guess I came from a more gentle, tamer breed. lol

This had a different feel and movement from the pieces you've penned. I've grown accustomed to precise narratives, but I must say I truly enjoyed this lyrical piece.
